History of the Negro Leagues in the Mon Valley

African Americans have been playing baseball since the 1860s. Teams were formed in Western Pennsylvania as early as the 1870s. But the heyday of Negro League or Black baseball was the 20th century – from 1910 to 1950. In Greater Pittsburgh, two significant teams developed – The Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. Both teams were franchises in the Negro League, formed by Rube Foster in 1920.  Both fielded Hall of Fame players. And both teams were the pride of African Americans in Pittsburgh. Join us to hear from Samuel Black, the Director of African American Programs at the Senator John Heinz History Center. (April 21, 2022)

Lost Amusement Parks of Western Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley

From Europe to the United States, amusement parks have historically served as community gathering places where folks of different heritage and social class enjoyed outdoor recreation, thrills and entertainment. The confluence of several factors spurred the growth of picnic groves and amusement parks in post-Civil War America: developing industries, expanding transportation systems, evolving technology and increased leisure time for the middle and working classes. Western Pennsylvania was a prime example of this as dozens of parks sprung up along electric streetcar lines, on the outskirts of towns, and in scenic rural areas during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, serving as respites from the daily grind – and even grime – of urban life. As part of her research for a forthcoming book on lost amusement parks, author Jennifer Sopko will share fascinating stories and images of some of the long-gone recreation spots around Western Pennsylvania’s Monongahela Valley, including Olympia Park in Versailles, Rainbow Gardens in White Oak, Calhoun Park in Lincoln Place, Homestead Park in Homestead, and Eldora Park near Donora.
